How To Choose A Fruit Tree
A fruit tree can be a wonderful addition to your garden. They are probably one of the only trees to offer you a better return than anything else in the garden. Did you know that a semi-dwarf sized apple tree can harvest you up to 500 apples in a single season? Fruit trees are organic, cost effective and healthy for your family. Here are some tips to choosing a fruit tree for your garden.

- Choose The Right Size – most fruit trees come in dwarf, semi-dwarf and standard. A dwarf tree is good for small spaces and do well in a 8′ diameter pot. Dwarf trees yield normal sized fruit but just yield less than other sizes. They last 3-5 years. Semi-dwarf trees are medium size and grow up to 10-16′. This type of tree will produce 100’s of fruit per season. Most people chose the semi-dwarf for the size and amount of fruit it produces. Standard are large trees and can grow up to 25-30′. It takes 3-5 years for these trees to start bearing fruit.
- Choose The Right Fruit – go to your local nursery and ask what kinds of fruit trees are local to your area. Also make sure what type of soil you have to match your tree to. Plum trees require moist soil but pears can handle drier soil.
- Here’s What To Look For When Picking Your Tree – find one with a long straight stem, has a defined leader that all branches depart from, well balanced and even branches, has no low branches and has several feet of stem.
Have fun planting and waiting for a bountiful season of fruit.
